Ocean Condition Flag Colors

Always Swim in Front of Lifeguards.  Keep Out of Water When Lifeguards Are Off Duty!

Yellow Flags – Medium Hazard

  • Moderate surf and/or currents
  • Enhanced Care and caution should be exercised
  • Exercise caution and listen to lifeguard warnings and keep a close eye on children
  • If swimming with children, or you aren’t a strong swimmer yourself, wear a life jacket when swimming

Double Yellow Flags – Elevated Hazard

  • Increased surf and/or currents are present
  • No flotation devices allowed
  • Extreme caution should be exercised
  • If you do go in the water use great care, but swimming IS strongly discouraged

Red Flags – High Hazard

  • Rough conditions such as strong surf and/or currents are present
  • Some water contact may be allowed at lifeguard’s discretion

Double Red Flags – Extreme Hazard

  • Water is closed to public use
  • Two red flags mean that the water is closed to swimming, as conditions are too dangerous for even the strongest swimmers
